Master of Businesss Administration - Operations Management
|
Production and operations management focuses on the most economical use of human and capital inputs to create products and services for society. In a typical organization, this function designs, operates, and controls a production or service system to determine a product's quality, costs, and timely availability. The operations management concentration at FAU differs from traditional definitions of industrial or manufacturing management. Rather than focusing on the technical feasibility of alternatives, the specialization prepares students to take managerial positions in all types of organizations, hospitals, hotels and restaurants, as well as manufacturing concerns.
In addition, students are exposed to the effects of internal decision making, such as production planning, on external constituents such as customers and suppliers. In addition to MBA core courses, students in the program take courses in supply chain management (MAN 6596), project planning and control (MAN 6525), and quality management (MAN 6526). Students also elect courses in data analysis (QMB 6603), operations research (QMB 6755), forecasting (MAN 6757), advanced industrial marketing (MAK 6456), advanced industrial economics (ECP 6405), marketing analysis and executive action (MAK 6816), and electronic commerce and internet business applications (ISM 6237). See "OM Special Programs" for details.
| Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration |
The College of Business offers a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Business Administration with concentrations in Accounting, Decision and Information Systems, Finance, Management, and Marketing. The doctoral program is full time and is designed to prepare students for university teaching and research. A minimum of seven credit hours is required (including dissertation hours).
Students entering the doctoral program with a Masters in Business Administration typically complete the requirements for the Ph.D. (including the dissertation) in 4-5 years.
Admission to the program is restricted to students who show exceptionally high promise for mastering the conceptual and analytic tools required for doctoral study in business.
The Ph.D. program at Florida Atlantic University is affiliated with Florida International University (F.I.U.) in that doctoral courses taught by F.I.U. professors can be taken for credit by students pursuing a Ph.D. at F.A.U. In addition, one or more members of the F.I.U. faculty may serve on committees that oversee the dissertations of F.A.U. students. Some F.A.U. faculty offer the same type of services for Ph.D. students at F.I.U. In this way, Ph.D. students can draw from the strengths of both programs.
